The life of 17-year-old Lamia, daughter of July Movement martyr Jasim Uddin, tragically ended on Saturday, April 26th, when she committed suicide. This devastating act occurred in the Shekhertek area of the capital around 9 pm the previous night, according to confirmed reports from Adabor police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) SM Zakaria. Neighbors recounted finding Lamia deceased in her residence at approximately 9 pm. Her family had plans for her to return to their village with her mother on Sunday. However, around 8 pm on Friday, while her mother was accompanying Lamia's younger sister to Madrasa, Lamia reportedly took her own life. Local residents rushed her to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where medical professionals pronounced her dead.

This final tragedy was preceded by a horrific incident on March 18th, when Lamia was brutally raped while returning home after visiting her martyred father's grave. The assault took place in Pashchim Algi village, under the Pangasia union of Dumki upazila in Patuakhali. Following the rape, Patuakhali police apprehended one of the accused, identified as Sakib Munshi. Dumki police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Zakir Hossain detailed the crime, stating that as Lamia was on her way home from the gravesite, locals Sakib Munshi and Sifat Munshi forcibly seized her and took her to an abandoned garden owned by Jalil Munshi, another local resident. There, they subjected her to the heinous act of rape. Adding to the cruelty, the perpetrators filmed the assault on a mobile phone and took photographs, threatening to disseminate the images and videos if Lamia revealed the crime or sought legal recourse. Despite these threats, the victim's family bravely filed a complaint on the very night of the assault. The suicide of young Lamia underscores the profound and lasting trauma inflicted by this violent act, casting a dark shadow over the memory of her martyred father and highlighting the urgent need for justice and support for victims of such crimes.
