The government is planning to establish a separate university for seven major government colleges in the capital. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has suggested naming it ‘July 36 University.’

On Thursday, a committee led by UGC Chairman Professor S M A Fayez proposed the name during a meeting with Education Adviser Professor Wahiduddin Mahmud. The UGC Chairman stated, "Among several names, ‘July 36 University’ stood out to us. The Education Adviser also appreciated it. However, the final decision will depend on student preferences."

The proposed university would include Dhaka College, Eden Mohila College, Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College, Kabi Nazrul Government College, Begum Badrunnesa Government Mohila College, Government Bangla College, and Government Titumir College. These colleges currently accommodate around 200,000 students and have over 1,000 faculty members.

Following student protests, university authorities announced on Monday that these seven colleges will no longer be affiliated with Dhaka University for admissions starting from the 2024-25 academic year. The UGC has held multiple discussions with students regarding the new university’s establishment, and talks are ongoing about forming an interim administration.
