Shamim Ahsan, Assistant Secretary of Jamaat-e-Islami in Barguna district, has been relieved of all party responsibilities, and his party membership (Rukon) has been suspended.
On Monday (January 26), a notice signed by Maulana Mohibullah Harun, Amir of the district Jamaat, announced the decision, which was taken on Sunday.
The notice stated that Shamim Ahsan recently made reckless remarks about Dhaka University at a public rally. His comments upset current and former students of the university, as well as people from various walks of life across the country. The statements tarnished the image of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and went against the party’s principles and values. Following the decision of the district executive council, Shamim Ahsan’s Rukon membership was suspended, and he was relieved of all responsibilities within the organization.
Maulana Mohibullah Harun confirmed that Shamim Ahsan’s statements were inconsistent with the party’s ideology and principles.
It is noteworthy that Shamim Ahsan made the controversial remarks about the Dhaka University Central Student Union (DUCSU) while campaigning for Jamaat’s candidate in the Barguna-2 constituency (Bamna-Patharghata-Betagi). On Saturday, at a public rally in Katakhali, Patharghata Upazila, he said:
"We have seen that after the DUCSU elections, what was once a drug den and brothel in DUCSU has been changed by the Islamic Chhatra Shibir. Therefore, Jamaat-e-Islami is capable of eradicating all injustice, extortion, and corruption from Bangladesh."
The remarks quickly spread on social media, sparking nationwide criticism and outrage.
