ATM Azam Khan, Amir of Rangpur Metropolitan Jamaat-e-Islami and a preliminarily nominated candidate for the Kaunia–Pirgacha constituency, has come under heavy criticism over remarks comparing political sacrifice to the sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim (AS). The controversy erupted after a video of his speech went viral on social media, triggering widespread backlash.

The remarks were made on January 8 at a discussion meeting in the Kadamtala area of Pirgacha upazila in Rangpur. The event was attended by 11-party alliance candidate and National Citizen Party (NCP) Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain.

In the nearly 1 minute and 25 second viral video, Azam Khan is heard saying that he received a phone call from the party center early in the morning of the 28th, informing him that he had been “sacrificed.” He then questioned whether this sacrifice was comparable to that of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) offering his son Ismail (AS). According to him, the caller replied that it was an even greater sacrifice.

Azam Khan further said he was told that while Prophet Ibrahim (AS) intended to sacrifice Ismail (AS) for the sake of Allah—ultimately resulting in the sacrifice of a ram—his own “sacrifice” involved the sacrifices of hundreds of thousands of men and women in Pirgacha and Kaunia, which was why it was considered greater. He said he responded by saying “Alhamdulillah.”

The video also shows him saying that central leaders spoke to him several times after the call, adding that the statements made were necessary in the current situation. He urged supporters to turn grief into strength and face the challenge ahead.

Following the circulation of the video, strong criticism erupted on social media, with many accusing him of hurting religious sentiments.

ATM Azam Khan was initially nominated by Jamaat-e-Islami for the Rangpur-4 constituency. However, the seat was later relinquished under an alliance agreement with the National Citizen Party. As a result, he did not submit nomination papers and instead expressed support for NCP Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain as the 11-party alliance candidate.
