Jahangirnagar University campus is home to 34 species of amphibians and reptiles, highlighting the ecological importance of its wetlands, woodlands and croplands for wildlife conservation, according to a study published in the Bangladesh Journal of Zoology.

Researchers recorded 12 amphibian species and 22 reptile species during field surveys conducted between May and October 2023. Across 14 study plots, they documented a total of 522 amphibians and 314 reptiles. The Indian bullfrog was found to be the most abundant amphibian species, while the Bengal monitor lizard was the most commonly recorded reptile.

The researchers warned that several threats, including ongoing construction, pollution, road kills and the filling of temporary breeding pools, could negatively affect these species and their habitats. They urged the university authorities to take steps to protect the campus wetlands and forested areas to preserve its biodiversity and support wildlife conservation.
