Israeli forces pushed further into the Gaza Strip on Friday, demolishing the only specialized cancer hospital in the war-ravaged territory. Meanwhile, Israeli officials reaffirmed their intention to seize more land until Hamas agrees to release its remaining hostages.

The hospital, situated in the Netzarim Corridor—an area that effectively divides Gaza in two—had been under Israeli control for a significant portion of the 17-month-long conflict. This week, Israel launched operations to retake the corridor following the collapse of the ceasefire with Hamas. The truce, which had been in effect since late January, brought a period of relative calm to Gaza and facilitated the release of over two dozen hostages. According to the Israeli military, their forces targeted the Turkish-Palestinian Friendship Hospital, claiming Hamas militants were operating from the facility. However, Turkey, which helped finance and construct the hospital, accused Israeli troops of previously using the site as a military base.

Dr. Zaki Al-Zaqzouq, head of the hospital’s oncology department, revealed that a medical team had visited the hospital during the ceasefire and found that, despite sustaining damage, parts of the facility remained functional. Expressing his disbelief over the attack, he stated through the aid organization Medical Aid for Palestinians, “I cannot comprehend what could possibly be gained from bombing a hospital that served as a lifeline for so many patients.” The Turkish Foreign Ministry also condemned the destruction, accusing Israel of deliberately working to make Gaza uninhabitable and forcibly displacing the Palestinian people.
