In Anwara, Chattogram, one of two children rescued from the roadside in freezing cold has died. The two-year-old boy passed away today, Monday, at 3 PM while receiving treatment in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Chattogram Medical College Hospital. The other child is a four-year-old girl.

The children had been found on the evening of December 28 near Mazar Gate in Barkhain Union, Anwara Upazila. They were initially taken in by Mahim Uddin, an auto-rickshaw driver, who rescued them from the cold roadside. After the matter became public, the Upazila administration took the children into its custody.

On the following Tuesday, Anwara Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Tahmina Akter brought the children to the District Commissioner of Chattogram. The DC’s office assumed responsibility for their treatment and expenses and handed the girl back to the auto-rickshaw driver Mahim Uddin. The severely ill two-year-old boy was admitted to the hospital, where he succumbed after a week.

Police said the children’s father is Khorshed Alam. Though his home is in Manikchhari Upazila, Khagrachhari, he worked as a rickshaw driver in Miarbazar, Banshkhali Upazila, Chattogram. Their mother left the house six months ago with both children and has not returned.

The rescue was first reported by Prothom Alo Online under the headline, “Two Children Found Sitting by the Road in Freezing Cold, Rescued by Auto-Rickshaw Driver.” On December 31, the court took notice of the report. Judicial Magistrate Md. Shakhawat Hossain instructed Anwara Police Station to register a case and submit a written report by January 5 on the measures taken under the Children Act, 2013. Following the court order, police arrested the children’s father, Khorshed Alam.

According to Anwara UNO Tahmina Akter, the boy’s grandmother has arrived in Chattogram to receive the body. After consulting with the Manikchhari UNO, a decision will be made regarding the handover of the child’s body.
