Political tensions are rising in West Bengal, India, over the revision of the voter list (SIR) ahead of the 2026 assembly elections. Jagannath Sarkar, BJP MP from Ranaghat, sparked controversy by commenting on the barbed wire fence along the India-Bangladesh border, saying that if he wins the election, "the two Bengals will become one."

He made this statement during a meeting held last Thursday in Banpur, Nadia district, West Bengal.

At the organizational meeting in Banpur, it was claimed that the party’s strength had increased with the induction of several new members. There, MP Jagannath Sarkar said, “I promise, if we win this election, we will remove the barbed wire along the Bangladesh border. The two Bengals were once one, and they will become one again.”

The BJP leader also added, “Even if Trinamool wins, the barbed wire will no longer remain. But that country will still remain Bangladesh.”

BJP leaders frequently allege that large-scale illegal immigration from Bangladesh is changing the demographic composition of several states in India. They also accuse the ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal of indirectly supporting this influx. The BJP has made the revision of the voter list (SIR) a key election strategy to curb illegal immigration.

In this context, the BJP MP’s remarks have sparked political controversy. Trinamool Congress general secretary Kunal Ghosh condemned Jagannath Sarkar’s comments, saying, “Jagannath Sarkar’s statement exposes BJP’s hypocrisy. On one hand, they say illegal immigration must stop; on the other hand, they promise to remove the barbed wire. The people of Bengal will see through this double standard.”
