A minor incident and a struggle for dominance led to a confrontation between students of Dhaka City College and Dhanmondi Ideal College in the capital on Wednesday, February 5th, in the afternoon. What started as a dispute soon escalated into brick-throwing and a counter-charge. The situation was eventually brought under control with the intervention of the police and college authorities later that day.

However, tensions from that clash resurfaced on Sunday, February 9th. Around 4 PM, more than a hundred students from Dhanmondi Ideal College, armed with sticks, gathered outside Dhaka City College. In an aggressive move, they removed the word "City" from the nameplate of Dhaka City College. This provocation angered City College students, leading to another violent clash that continued in phases for nearly two hours.

Eyewitnesses recounted that around 4 PM, the group of Ideal College students arrived with sticks and began attacking, throwing bricks, and striking with their weapons while dismantling the nameplate. Enraged by this act, students from Dhaka City College launched a counterattack, resulting in a prolonged confrontation between the two groups. The violent exchange caused widespread panic in the surrounding area, and traffic on Mirpur Road came to an abrupt halt as chaos unfolded.
