The government has decided to make a change in the position of Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT). It is learned that Advocate Aminul Islam is being considered to replace the current Chief Prosecutor, Advocate Tajul Islam.

Last Sunday, Law Minister Mohammad Asaduzzaman reportedly summoned Tajul Islam and informed him of the government’s high-level decision. The information has been confirmed by British journalist David Bergman and investigative outlet The Dissent.

Sources further said that an official notification regarding the change may be issued on Monday. Advocate Aminul Islam previously served as a member of the legal team representing BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia — mother of current Prime Minister Tarique Rahman — in a corruption case in which she was later sentenced to imprisonment.

At present, the ICT is handling cases related to crimes against humanity allegedly committed during the July 2024 movement, including the killing and injury of protesters and bystanders. The tribunal is prosecuting Awami League politicians and members of law enforcement agencies in connection with those incidents. The movement ultimately led to the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government.

The tribunal is also conducting trials over enforced disappearance cases that occurred between 2009 and 2024. So far, verdicts have been delivered in three cases.
