Uncertainty has arisen over Bangladesh’s participation in the upcoming T20 World Cup. Concerns about the team’s security in India were reportedly highlighted in a letter sent by the ICC’s security division to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), according to sports adviser Asif Nazrul.

Speaking at a press conference at the BFF-Bangladesh Football Federation building on Monday (January 12), Youth and Sports Adviser Professor Asif Nazrul said the letter cited three reasons why Bangladesh’s security risk could increase during the T20 World Cup in India. One of these is the inclusion of left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman in the squad. The letter reportedly stated that Mustafizur’s presence would increase the team’s security risk.

After discussing football and other BFF matters, Nazrul brought up the cricket World Cup, saying: “The ICC’s security team has sent a letter stating that Bangladesh’s security risk would rise under three conditions: first, if Mustafizur is included in the team; second, if Bangladeshi fans roam around India wearing the team jersey; and third, the closer the elections approach, the higher the security risk for Bangladesh.”

Commenting on ICC’s security assessment, the sports adviser said, “Are we really going to leave out our best bowler, prevent fans from wearing jerseys, or postpone elections for cricket? Nothing could be more absurd, unrealistic, or illogical than that.”

He added, “No one should monopolize the right to play cricket. The fate of a sport or a tournament cannot be determined by market forces. If the ICC is truly a global organization and does not bow to India, then Bangladesh should be allowed to play in the T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka if necessary. We will not compromise on this issue.”
