Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has declared his decision to voluntarily surrender to authorities in protest, demanding the release of the party’s imprisoned leader, ATM Azharul Islam. He announced that he would present himself at the Dhaka court premises on February 25.

Shafiqur Rahman made this declaration through a post on his verified Facebook page at 5 PM on Thursday (February 20).

Addressing both his party members and the nation, he wrote: “Our leader, ATM Azharul Islam, continues to be unjustly imprisoned, a victim of the ruthless oppression of fascism. While all other national leaders have gradually been released, he remains behind bars, enduring suffering due to injustice and discrimination. It is no longer possible for me to remain free while he is still imprisoned. We have allowed the government ample time to act.”

He further stated: “As a protest against this ongoing repression and as a demand for ATM Azharul Islam’s release, I will voluntarily appear at the court premises on February 25, 2025, to be taken into custody. The Ministry of Law and the Ministry of Home Affairs should take the necessary steps to arrest me and send me to prison. InshaAllah, you will find me at the designated location on time.”
