Twelve people, including two Bangladeshi nationals, were killed and 309 others injured in an attack by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi armed group on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, according to Saudi authorities. The attack took place on Saturday.

Mohammed al-Bukhaiti, a senior Houthi official, claimed responsibility for the attack on Riyadh airport in a statement on Saturday. He said the attack was carried out in retaliation for Saudi strikes in Yemen, alleging that civilian infrastructure had also been targeted.

The attack marked the third reported strike on King Khalid International Airport this week. Following the latest incident, airport operations were temporarily suspended, and all flights were diverted to other airports.

In a statement posted on X, Saudi Arabia’s civil aviation authority said at least 12 people had been killed. The victims included four Saudi nationals, two Bangladeshis, and one citizen each from the United States, Jordan, Palestine, Syria, Sudan, and Egypt.

People familiar with the situation said hospitals were overwhelmed as injured passengers were transported by ambulances and helicopters. Several of the injured were reported to be in critical condition.

No warning was issued before Saturday’s attack, and Saudi Arabia’s threat detection and alert systems reportedly did not trigger any alerts. Earlier attacks on King Khalid International Airport this week had killed four people. A Saudi commercial aircraft parked on the runway also sustained extensive damage.

## Witnesses Describe Injured Passengers at Airport

A witness who was at the airport on Saturday, speaking on condition of anonymity, said they saw an explosion and subsequently found several injured people lying on the ground inside the airport. More than a dozen ambulances were seen heading towards the airport.

A video verified by Reuters also showed ambulances at the airport.

An injured passenger, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity, said they had seen something flying through the sky outside the airport before part of a ceiling collapsed near an exit gate.

Another passenger who witnessed the attack near the airport’s domestic terminal told AFP, “I was at Gate 403. I saw the attack at Gate 401. I saw injured people with my own eyes. Everyone was running around.”

A medical source said health officials had urgently called in doctors to respond to what was described as a “serious emergency situation” following the attack.

Hours after the strike in Riyadh, a spokesperson for the Saudi-led international coalition fighting the Houthis said in a post on X that a projectile had struck near King Fahd International Airport in Dammam.

Early Sunday, the coalition announced that it had intercepted a missile southeast of the Saudi capital.

## Airport Operations Temporarily Suspended

Saudi Arabia’s civil aviation authority said an assessment of the damage at King Khalid International Airport was underway. Airport operations were temporarily suspended as a result.

According to flight-tracking website Flightradar24, all flights bound for Riyadh were diverted to other airports or cancelled. At one point, only a helicopter was seen circling above the airport.

Flightradar24 reported that 155 arriving flights and 161 departing flights were cancelled on Saturday. A further 222 flights experienced delays in departures or arrivals.

Following Houthi attacks on Thursday and earlier in the week, several airlines had already suspended or cancelled flights to the Saudi capital.
