Meta has deleted the Instagram account of Palestinian journalist Saleh Aljafarawi, who was shot and killed in Gaza on October 12. Aljafarawi was widely known for documenting Israel’s war in Gaza for his audience of 4.5 million followers. He was reportedly killed during clashes between Hamas security forces and an armed family in Gaza City’s Sabra district. His account and archives were removed shortly after his death.

Meta stated that the account was taken down “under its policy on dangerous organizations and individuals.” UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese criticized this move, accusing Meta of undermining journalism in Gaza and “killing the truth twice.” She described Aljafarawi as “a young, courageous journalist” murdered amid Israel’s alleged commission of genocide.

An April 2025 investigation found that Meta had removed thousands of social media posts and accounts discussing the war, mainly targeting Palestinian journalists and activists. Human Rights Watch accused Meta of silencing pro-Palestinian voices across Instagram and Facebook. Reports indicate that between October and November 2023, Israel killed approximately 1,000 Palestinian journalists in Gaza. Overall, Israeli bombings have killed more than 39,000 Palestinians since October 2023, according to rights groups.
