A Hindu resident of Jammu’s Narwal area stepped forward on Friday to offer land to Muslim journalist Arfaz Daing, whose 40-year-old home was demolished a day earlier by the Jammu Development Authority (JDA) for allegedly being built on encroached land. The demolition has sparked strong criticism from political parties and civil society, who called it an act of “selective targeting.”

Neighbour Kuldeep Sharma announced that he would donate five marlas (0.03125 acres) of land to the displaced family. “I couldn’t bear seeing children and their parents left under the open sky,” he said. “If they demolish a house built on five marlas, I will offer ten. No one will be allowed to disturb Jammu’s harmony and brotherhood.” He also accused the BJP of encouraging “divisive politics.”

The JDA action—approved under Vice Chairman Rupesh Kumar, appointed by J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha—has drawn widespread condemnation.

BJP leader Ravinder Raina visited the site and criticised the JDA for demolishing the house without prior notice. “We do not support demolitions. Humanity and unity come before politics,” he said, adding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi “believes in building homes for the poor, not tearing them down.”
