The High Court has upheld the death sentence for 20 people and life imprisonment for 5 in the highly publicized murder case of BUET student Abrar Fahad. The verdict, given on March 16, 2025, by the bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain, confirms the Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-1’s decision.

Abrar Fahad, a second-year student of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, was found dead at BUET’s Sher-e-Bangla Hall on October 6, 2019. His father, Barkat Ullah, filed a case against 19 individuals. After investigation, 25 BUET students were charged in connection with his death. The charge sheet stated that the accused killed Abrar under the false suspicion that he was a member of Chhatra Shibir.

The trial court sentenced 20 individuals to death and 5 to life imprisonment on December 8, 2021. The case was referred to the High Court for review, which started hearing in 2022. After several hearings, the court finalized the verdict on March 16, 2025.

The death sentence convicts include high-ranking members of BUET’s Chhatra League, while the five sentenced to life imprisonment hold lesser positions within the organization.
