Information and Broadcasting Adviser to the Prime Minister, Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman, has said that an app is being developed for purchasing fuel.

He made the remarks on Tuesday (April 7) while speaking to journalists at the Department of Information at the Secretariat about the government’s activities and current issues.

Addressing global challenges in the energy sector, he said that although many countries have increased fuel prices, Bangladesh has not yet done so. Whether prices will be adjusted next month will depend on the situation.

He noted that while there is some pressure on fuel supply due to global conditions, the shortage is not severe enough to cause long queues. Rather, illegal stockpiling and attempts at smuggling have contributed to the situation.

He added that once the app is introduced, fuel purchases will be made through it, allowing authorities to track how much fuel is bought and when.

On transport issues, he said that despite no electricity shortage, unregulated auto-rickshaws cannot be allowed in cities due to safety concerns, including lack of fitness and untrained drivers, which have led to accidents. The government is considering safer alternatives.

He also stated that Bangladesh is not yet ready to graduate from the Least Developed Countries (LDC) category due to global and economic challenges, and there are no current plans for transition.

Additionally, he said that any corruption during the interim government period will be investigated after restructuring the Anti-Corruption Commission.

Regarding the measles vaccine shortage, he blamed negligence by the previous government. He noted that children are dying from measles, calling it unfortunate, and said the government has started vaccination drives in 30 high-risk areas, with a nationwide campaign set to begin on May 3.
