South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has stated that the genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) will continue despite the Gaza ceasefire.

Speaking in parliament on Tuesday (October 14), he emphasized that South Africa remains determined to pursue the case, despite the US-backed deal aimed at ending Israel's war in the besieged Gaza Strip.

“We welcome the peace agreement that has been reached. It will not affect the ongoing case at the International Court of Justice,” he said.

“The case is ongoing. It now has to reach a stage where Israel responds to our application to the court, which they must do by January next year.”

South Africa filed the genocide case against Israel in Gaza in December 2023 and submitted a detailed 500-page brief in October 2024.

Israel is expected to submit its counterarguments on January 12, 2026. Oral hearings are scheduled for 2027, with a final ruling anticipated in late 2027 or early 2028.

The ICJ has already issued three provisional measures, ordering Israel to halt the killings and allow humanitarian aid into Gaza. However, Israel has largely failed to comply.

According to the Palestinian Health Authority, more than 67,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since October 2023, most of them women and children.
