A hotel owner was beaten to death while trying to protect a teenage employee during a dispute in Kaliganj, Gazipur, on Friday (17 January). Police have detained three people—a couple and their son—in connection with the incident.

The incident occurred around 11am at Baishakhi Sweetmeat and Hotel near the Kaliganj municipality area. The victim was identified as Liton Chandra Ghosh, also known as Kali, 55, the owner of the hotel.

Gazipur Superintendent of Police Md Sharif Uddin confirmed the incident, calling it a tragic but isolated crime. He said there was no communal or minority-related motive behind the killing and assured that the law and order situation remains normal. Police, he added, are on high alert to prevent misinformation, and those responsible will face strict legal action.

Kaliganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Zakir Hossain said police recovered the body from the scene and are questioning the three detainees. He said injury marks were found on the victim’s face and chest, and preliminary findings suggest death was caused by a blow to the chest. Legal proceedings are underway.

According to police, the victim’s family and local residents, the dispute stemmed from the alleged theft of a bunch of bananas from an orchard in Baligaon area a day earlier. On Friday morning, the orchard owner’s son, Masum Mia, went to the hotel and claimed the bananas there had been stolen from their orchard. An argument broke out between Masum and the hotel’s teenage employee, Ananta Das, 17, which later escalated.

Masum’s parents—Mohammad Swapan Mia, 55, and Majeda Khatun, 45—later arrived and joined the altercation. When Liton Chandra Ghosh intervened to defuse the situation and protect his employee, he was assaulted. He was struck hard on the face and chest, collapsed, and died on the spot, locals said.

Local residents detained the three accused and later handed them over to police. All three are residents of the Baligaon area in Kaliganj upazila.
