Dr. Hamdi al-Najjar, a Palestinian physician and the head of a private medical center in Khan Younis, has passed away from injuries sustained in an Israeli airstrike that occurred on May 23. The same attack also claimed the lives of his nine children. The only survivors of the devastating strike were his wife, Dr. Alaa al-Najjar, and their 11-year-old son Adam, who was critically injured. The airstrike hit their home shortly after Dr. Hamdi had dropped off his wife at her workplace, Nasser Hospital. Both Dr. Hamdi and Dr. Alaa were widely respected in their community for their humanitarian efforts, often providing free medical treatment to underprivileged patients.

The children who perished ranged in age from just six months to 12 years old, leaving a heart-wrenching void in the wake of the tragedy. Adam, the couple’s only surviving child, is currently undergoing treatment in a local hospital. Following widespread public outcry and appeals, the Italian government has announced its willingness to facilitate his transfer abroad for emergency medical care.

In response to the incident, the Israel Defense Forces stated that the airstrike was intended to target militants operating in what they described as a combat zone. They also noted that the event is under ongoing review. The war, which began following Hamas’s large-scale attack on Israel on October 7, has resulted in the deaths of more than 54,000 people in Gaza so far, according to figures released by local health authorities.
