Former Inspector General of Police Benazir Ahmed has been arrested in Dubai by local authorities with assistance from Interpol in connection with a case filed by Bangladesh’s Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed confirmed the arrest, saying Benazir was detained on June 12 and that necessary steps will be taken to bring him back to Bangladesh.
Benazir is under investigation for allegedly amassing vast wealth while serving in public office. The ACC claims he and his family acquired at least 613.41 bighas of land across several districts, including large areas in Gopalganj and Madaripur that previously belonged to members of the Hindu community.
The former police chief, who also served as head of the Rapid Action Battalion, has faced allegations of land acquisition through intimidation and pressure. He was previously sanctioned by the US over alleged involvement in extrajudicial killings during his tenure at the force.
Authorities allege that many of his assets, including the Savanna Eco Resort and Natural Park, were built while he served as Rab chief and later as the country's police chief.
