In Ghoraghat, Dinajpur, a planned child marriage of a 14-year-old eighth-grade girl was stopped by the local administration after her mother alerted authorities by phone. The incident occurred on Sunday night around 9 PM.

According to police and neighbors, the girl is a student at a local secondary girls’ school. Last week, her father had fixed her marriage date with Sagar Islam from Gobindganj, Gaibandha, and the wedding was scheduled for Sunday night.

However, the girl’s mother opposed the marriage and repeatedly asked her husband not to marry off their underage daughter. The disagreement led to arguments between the couple. On Sunday night, when the bridegroom’s party arrived to take the girl for the wedding, her mother contacted the Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) for help in stopping the child marriage. The UNO immediately sent police to the village.

Upon learning of the police presence, the groom’s party left midway. The authorities verified the girl’s birth certificate and other documents, confirming she was under 18, and stopped the marriage proceedings. The police also warned her father not to arrange her marriage until she reaches 18.

OC Shahidul Islam of Ghoraghat police station confirmed the incident, stating that the groom’s party could not be found at the scene. He added that the family was advised to ensure the girl’s education and social safety.
