Failed students of this year’s SSC exam are protesting in front of the Dhaka Education Board. On Monday (July 13) around 2:30 PM, two groups of students gathered and started protesting near the board office in Bakshibazar, Dhaka. They demanded a fair supplementary exam system and expressed their wish to get admitted to colleges. They warned that without these, they would lose a whole year. The students also questioned how six hundred thousand students could fail in a single year.

The board authorities stated that one group of failed students is protesting to demand a chance for supplementary exams, while another group is asking for corrections in HSC admit cards and related documents. Police are present at the site to maintain order. The protesters carried placards with slogans like “We want college admission,” “We want supplementary exams,” and “We want to pass combining MCQ and written scores.”

The students explained that they failed mainly due to losing just 1-2 marks in the MCQ section, despite scoring 40 to over 50 marks in the written part. As a result, they have been excluded from the education system for a year. Because of the separate passing rules for MCQ and written parts, around six hundred thousand students failed this year. They called this system inhumane and criticized its implementation without reforming the education system.

According to the results published on July 10, a total of 666,000 students failed the SSC and equivalent exams this year across the nine general education boards as well as the madrasa and technical education boards. Among the failed students, 324,716 are boys and 275,944 are girls.
