A new political platform is set to emerge, initiated by several leaders who recently resigned from the National Citizens’ Party (NCP) and student leaders active in the July mass uprising. The platform, named “Jonojatra”, is expected to be formally announced on January 16 at the central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka.

Sources say former NCP joint convener Anik Rai, former joint secretary Tuhin Khan, and former coordinator of the anti-discrimination student movement Nazifa Jannat will hold key roles in the new platform. In addition, Meghmallar Bosu, president of the Dhaka University Student Union under Bangladesh Chhatra Union, is also reportedly joining Jonojatra. According to the organizers, the goal is to introduce an alternative, progressive political practice in the country.

Progressive teachers, intellectuals, and leaders from various social movements are said to be involved in guiding the initiative, while young leaders will take frontline roles.

Asked about the platform, Bosu said on Monday, “We have been preparing for a long time to create a platform to speak for the oppressed. I do not want to reveal more at this stage.” He confirmed that the platform will be officially launched on January 16 under the name Jonojatra.

The organizers stated that Jonojatra aims to promote a political agenda based on democratic socialism. Before participating in elections, the platform plans to operate for six months to a year, engaging in policy dialogues, organizing citizens, participating in social movements, and building grassroots networks. They hope that within six months to a year after the 13th national parliamentary election, the platform will evolve into a full-fledged political party. Preparations for a constitution and political and economic programs are underway.

Following NCP’s decision to form an electoral alliance with Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami ahead of the 13th parliamentary elections, at least 16 central leaders resigned. Some of these leaders are expected to join Jonojatra in stages. One of the resigning leaders, former NCP joint secretary and media cell editor Mushfiq Us Salehin, said he has not yet decided whether to join any platform or party.

A student leader involved in the initiative, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that young people will take the main responsibility in Jonojatra, while teachers, intellectuals, and experienced social activists will provide guidance from behind the scenes. Former student leaders, teachers, and political activists based abroad are also involved, many initially working without revealing their identities or using pseudonyms.

According to the organizers, discussions and preparations for creating a new political platform have been ongoing across Dhaka and other regions since the July mass uprising. After a series of meetings and gatherings, the decision was made to launch the platform officially. The declaration has been finalized, and preparations for the launch event are nearly complete.

Regarding leadership, Anik Rai said the platform has been shaped through discussions with activists, student leaders, and others. He added that while a formal announcement will come first, many more people will join later. He confirmed that coordinators of the July movement, elected student leaders, and others who played key roles in the uprising will be part of Jonojatra.
