During the remand hearing, Dr. Dipu Moni stated in court, “I am unwell. There is no adequate medical facility in the prison. A few days ago, former Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun passed away in the hospital due to lack of proper treatment. Now, do we need to prove that we were sick?” On Monday morning, October 6, the police produced Dr. Dipu Moni along with former MP Solaiman Selim from prison to appear before the court. At that time, the investigation officer of the case, Shahbagh Police Station Sub-Inspector Mainul Khan Pulak, applied for a 10-day remand of Dipu Moni in connection with the Monir Hossain murder case. Simultaneously, an application was made to present Solaiman Selim regarding his arrest in the Lalbagh Police Station murder case. At 10:30 am, both were brought under strict police security to the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court. First, the remand hearing of Dr. Dipu Moni commenced. During the hearing, Dipu Moni’s lawyer, Gazi Faisal Islam, pointed out that his client had been in prison for an extended period. Being a woman, she was suffering from multiple illnesses, and apart from her name, the case statement contained no substantive information. The lawyer requested that the accused be allowed to speak on her own behalf. With the permission of the court, Dr. Dipu Moni addressed the bench, saying, “I am unwell. There is no adequate medical facility available in prison. On the 9th and 10th of last month, I was taken to Shaheed Taj Uddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital due to my illness. However, not all necessary tests could be conducted there. Later, permission was sought to carry out tests at another hospital. I was supposed to be taken to the hospital yesterday, but due to the absence of a police squad, I could not go. I assumed I would be taken today, but instead, I was brought to court. I am not being taken to the hospital because of the police squad, but only to the court. I am seeking justice and am not receiving the treatment that I require.” Regarding her legal situation, she further explained, “There are more than 60 cases filed against me. Yet, I am not being provided a proper opportunity to consult with a lawyer. Over the past year, I have only been able to meet a lawyer three times. Whenever I am taken to court, I am brought the same day as the hearing so that the lawyer can speak to me briefly at the jail. Only then can we discuss the cases even a little.” In response, Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi, representing the state, argued that meetings with lawyers are available according to prison regulations and that Dipu Moni could meet her lawyer at the jail gate if she wished. He further claimed that she was attempting to go to the hospital for political advantage. Dr. Dipu Moni, however, insisted again, “Honorable Court, former Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun passed away in the hospital due to lack of treatment. Do we now need to desperately prove that we are unwell?” During this time, the lawyers present continued discussing the matter. While standing in the dock, former MP Solaiman Selim also commented, “Legal arguments are taking place here. Are all of them state lawyers?” Some lawyers standing nearby noted that there were still bloodstains on his body. In response, Solaiman Selim remarked, “So we won’t be provided treatment because of that?” Following the hearing, the court granted Dr. Dipu Moni a four-day remand in this case. Subsequently, former MP Solaiman Selim was formally presented regarding his arrest in the Shaon Sikder murder case under Lalbagh Police Station. Around 11 am, both individuals were once again escorted back to the court’s jail under police guard.
