Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister Dr. ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon said that Bangladesh should evaluate its progress in technical education by comparing itself with other countries and understanding how they have advanced.

He emphasized that engineering education and technical education are not the same. Responding to a student at a view-sharing meeting at the Institution of Diploma Engineers Bangladesh (IDEB) auditorium in Dhaka on Sunday (April 5), he said that these two fields should not be confused.

During the discussion, a student from Dhaka Polytechnic Institute identified his study as Diploma Civil Engineering, while the minister clarified it as Civil Technology under technical education. The minister further stressed that engineering and diploma engineering are different, highlighting the importance of vocational and technical training. He also referenced vocational universities, such as those in Singapore, to explain global practices.

The minister added that technical education is more practical and vocational in nature, while engineering follows a different academic structure. In response, the student argued that diploma engineering is not widely recognized in many countries and emphasized the strong practical components in Bangladesh’s polytechnic curriculum.

The minister concluded that there is a need to expand technical education and establish new technical institutions, stating that engineering and technical education should not be merged.
