For the first time, female students have been allowed to perform Taraweeh prayers at Dhaka University’s (DU) central mosque, Masjidul Jamia. Umme Salma, Common Room and Cafeteria Secretary of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU), helped organize the initiative.

She explained that the central mosque is usually open for Zuhr, Asr, and Maghrib prayers, but after Maghrib it remains closed to female students. During Ramadan, not all mosques offer space for women to perform the full Taraweeh prayers. To address this, they decided to keep the women’s prayer area in the central mosque open for all 30 days of Ramadan.

“From my personal experience performing Taraweeh at other mosques, I realized having this opportunity at the central mosque would benefit us greatly. Non-residential students previously had no chance to perform Taraweeh, while residential students had arrangements last year,” she said.

Considering the needs of non-residential students, DUCSU decided to keep the designated women’s prayer space open, finalizing the plan after coordinating with the university authorities over the phone.
