The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) will take legal measures against drivers who honk in and around Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. This directive was issued on Tuesday (January 20) through a public notice signed by DMP Commissioner Sheikh Md. Sajjat Ali.

The notice also stated that, starting January 25, immediate punitive action will be taken against drivers who honk in these areas to control noise pollution.

According to the notice, since September 2025, the airport area and a 1.5-kilometer zone to its north and south—from Scholastica School in Uttara to Hotel La Meridien—have been designated as a “silent zone.” The areas of Gulshan, Banani, Baridhara, and Niketan are also included in this zone. Under the rules, honking in a silent zone may result in a maximum fine of Tk 10,000 or imprisonment for up to three months.

From January 25, civil aviation roads and parking areas around the airport will be strictly monitored, and immediate fines will be imposed on violators. Special mobile courts, with the presence of officials from the Department of Environment, BRTA, Civil Aviation Authority, Dhaka North City Corporation, and DMP magistrates, will conduct these operations. Depending on the severity of the offense, both fines and imprisonment may be applied.

The authorities have urged drivers to refrain from honking in the airport area, in accordance with the Noise Pollution (Control) Rules, 2025.
