Although Dr. N. A. Khan has been living in the United States for many years, he remains deeply connected to Bangladesh. He keeps up with local events, speaks with friends and colleagues about issues in Bangladesh, and watches Bangladeshi online news regularly. As a professor of biomedical engineering at Rutgers University in New Jersey, he closely follows the development of higher education, especially science and technology, in Bangladesh. He regularly interacts with researchers and senior officials in various educational institutions in the country.

Dr. Khan believes that Bangladesh’s economic advancement will depend largely on science, engineering, and technical expertise. If Bangladesh continues relying solely on low-wage labor for industrial development, it will not be able to keep up with other countries. Bangladesh must grow its workforce in science, engineering, and research, as well as expand PhD-level programs.

For this reason, Dr. Khan, along with some Bangladeshis living in the United States, has worked to establish a new institute focused on research and higher education. This initiative follows extensive discussions with professors, vice chancellors, teachers, and researchers in Bangladesh. The next step is to involve government policymakers, as well as academic leaders and intellectuals in Bangladesh, in expanding the development of science and technology–based education and scientific research in the country.
