A team from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) has created a new rickshaw model, which they assert will significantly improve the safety of rickshaws compared to traditional designs. However, the production cost of this new model is expected to be similar to that of the current battery-powered rickshaws. In response, the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has announced that the new rickshaw model will be permitted to operate on the streets of Dhaka. As part of this transition, older rickshaws will gradually be removed from the roads.

The innovative rickshaw was developed by a six-member research team, led by Professor Md. Ehsan from BUET’s Department of Mechanical Engineering. While the new design shares many similarities with the battery-powered easybikes currently in operation, the BUET team has incorporated 16 new features that address safety shortcomings found in 12 different types of battery-powered rickshaws that are presently used across the country.

According to the team, the new rickshaw will have a length of 3.2 meters, a width of 1.5 meters, and a height of 2.1 meters. These dimensions are similar to the existing rickshaws, ensuring it can easily accommodate two passengers, with a weight capacity of 325 to 425 kilograms. The BUET team emphasized that one of the key improvements in the new design is the braking system, which will be far superior to those on current rickshaws. The new rickshaw is equipped with hydraulic disc brakes on all three wheels, along with an additional parking brake, ensuring that the rickshaw is much easier to control and operate safely.
