Once neglected by society, 28 third-gender students have now picked up their pens to build their place in that very society, setting a new milestone in the history of Rangpur and the country.

The students were seen taking their Geography and Environment exam at 9:00 AM on Saturday (April 25). The SSC Program-2026 under Bangladesh Open University began on Friday and is being viewed as a significant step toward inclusive education.

After completing the three-hour exam, the students said reaching this stage after overcoming numerous challenges is a matter of pride. They hope education will help strengthen their position in society.

Examinee Anowara Islam Rani said, “This is not just an exam, it is recognition of our existence. We have faced neglect for a long time. Getting this opportunity is our biggest strength. We want to study, become self-reliant, and live with dignity.”

Other students said they are making the most of the opportunity provided by the government and are hopeful about achieving good results.

According to education experts, third-gender people in Bangladesh have long faced discrimination in education and society. However, recent government and private initiatives have expanded opportunities for their inclusion, and this participation reflects that positive change.

Shujan (Citizens for Good Governance) Rangpur district president Principal Khandaker Fakhrul Anam Benju said the students’ determination, courage, and resilience in overcoming challenges will serve as an inspiration to others.

A total of 1,132 students are taking exams at nine regional centers of Bangladesh Open University in Rangpur. Among them, 28 third-gender students are sitting for exams at Payraband Begum Rokeya Memorial Girls' High School in Mithapukur, where there are 159 examinees in total.

From the 2025–26 academic year, Bangladesh Open University introduced special benefits for third-gender students in its school-based SSC program, including a 60% waiver on course fees to make education more accessible.

School principal Md. Mahedul Alam said the participation of 28 third-gender students at once is a rare event, and the school ensured a comfortable environment so they could take the exam without hesitation.

Regional Director Abu Hafiz Md. Fazle Nizami said supportive measures were taken to ensure the students do not face discrimination. Vice-Chancellor Dr. Mohammad Siddiqur Rahman Khan emphasized that education is a fundamental right and no one should be deprived of it because of gender identity.

Officials believe this initiative is not just about taking an exam—it is an important step toward ensuring equality, dignity, and rights in society.
