Victims range from celebrities to teenagers, and now, for the first time, 'cyberbullying' is being officially recognized as a criminal offense. This change has been incorporated into the draft of the 'Cyber Security Ordinance 2024.' On Tuesday, December 24, during a media briefing at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka, Shafiqul Alam, the Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, announced this development. Alam stated, "We aim to make cyberspace safe for all. Various crimes, including the bullying of mothers, sisters, and children, take place in cyberspace. It is the government's responsibility to ensure this space remains secure. In this regard, the Cyber Security Ordinance draft has been approved." He further added, "This ordinance will ensure public safety while safeguarding press freedom, with no interference in the media’s autonomy." Addressing the previous government's cyber security law and its controversial misuse, Alam remarked, "The fallen autocrat Sheikh Hasina used the previous Cyber Security Act to suppress opposition, silence voices, and instill fear. This has been rectified with the approval of the 'Cyber Security Ordinance 2024.'" ICT Policy Advisor Faiz Tayyeb Ahmed commented on the law, saying, "The law is comprehensive, forward-thinking, and technologically advanced. It offers sufficient compensation to victims of harassment, mandates court notification in such cases, and ensures adequate space for judges. Most provisions are now bailable, and penalties have been reduced by more than half compared to the Digital Security Act."
