A Dhaka court has issued an order to confiscate the assets of former Member of Parliament and cricketer Shakib Al Hasan in connection with a cheque fraud case, as reported by Prothom Alo. The directive was given on 24 March by Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ziadur Rahman, who serves at the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Dhaka. The court’s bench assistant, Atiqur Rahman, confirmed the decision.

This legal action follows a previous event on 19 January when the court had issued an arrest warrant for Shakib Al Hasan, who is currently residing abroad, in relation to bounced cheques amounting to Tk4.14 crore. The court had set 24 March as the deadline for the execution of the arrest warrant. As the police reported their inability to apprehend the accused, the court decided to proceed with the confiscation of Shakib’s assets. The case was filed on 15 December by Sahibur Rahman, the Public Relations Officer of IFIC Bank, who took legal action against Shakib and three other individuals. The court had summoned the accused to appear on the specified date and had scheduled the next hearing for 19 January.

The case details reveal that the agro farm in question took a loan of Tk1 crore as working capital and an additional Tk1.5 crore as a term loan from IFIC Bank’s Banani branch in 2017. However, due to the company’s failure to repay the working capital loan on time, the bank subsequently converted it into a term loan.
