Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus has stated that in today’s world, not being prepared for war is tantamount to a suicidal mistake. He made these remarks on Wednesday, April 30, while addressing the annual Bangladesh Air Force exercise in Dhaka. He affirmed that the government remains committed to building a modern and capable air force to safeguard the country's independence and sovereignty.

Dr. Yunus said, “Like many others, I am personally anti-war. I do not wish to see conflict in the world. In many cases, preparing for war often leads to war. So, I have serious reservations about maintaining war preparedness. However, we live in a world where the threat of war constantly looms over us. In such a context, staying unprepared is no longer a viable option.”

Citing an example, he noted, “Just this morning, I heard in the news—perhaps it was a rumor—that a war between India and Pakistan might break out today. So, in such a volatile situation, failing to prepare for potential conflict would be a fatal mistake. When it comes to preparation, there is no halfway measure. This is a situation where victory is the only option—defeat cannot be considered. Therefore, we must aim for the highest level of preparedness.”

Highlighting the economic challenges, the Chief Adviser acknowledged that war is an extremely costly affair. “Our economy is currently in a fragile state. Bangladesh has not yet become a strong, resilient economy. Moreover, mismanagement and corruption by the previous government have worsened the situation. Given this reality, we must develop a comprehensive strategy—one that always extends a hand toward peace, but simultaneously ensures we are fully prepared,” he said.

Reflecting on the Air Force’s demonstration, Dr. Yunus expressed deep appreciation: “It was a thrilling experience. Usually, we only see such displays in movies. Watching it live today was remarkable, thanks to all of you.”

Commenting on the overall preparedness, he added, “This boosts our confidence—not just in terms of military strength, but in the capability of our young men and women. Their ability to prepare with such excellence and face difficult challenges fills us with pride.”
