After a 16-year hiatus, private television channel Channel One is set to resume broadcasting. The channel will restart its commercial operations from Monday evening (April 27).

The announcement was made on Sunday (April 26) at a press conference held at The Westin Hotel in Dhaka by Channel One Managing Director Gias Uddin Al Mamun.

He said Channel One began its journey on January 24, 2006, offering a diverse range of news and entertainment. From the beginning, the channel focused on public interest, national welfare, and maintaining editorial independence. “Questioning those in power has always been the main responsibility of the media, and we remained committed to that principle,” he said, adding that this stance once led to tensions with several government officials.

He further noted that due to its editorial independence and strong ethical standards, Channel One quickly gained popularity among viewers.

The channel ceased broadcasting in 2010, just four years after its launch, stopping transmission abruptly before the 7 PM news on April 27. The management had then alleged that the closure was driven by political retaliation from the then Awami League government. Although legal action was taken in the High Court at the time, the petition was dismissed, leaving the channel off-air for years.

Mamun said that after the “July uprising of 2024” and the fall of the former government, efforts to restore broadcasting rights resumed and eventually succeeded. He added that the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission’s 2010 decision was stayed by the Appellate Division on February 24 last year, removing legal barriers to resuming operations.

Channel One is scheduled to resume commercial broadcasting at 6:57 PM on April 27—the exact time it went off-air 16 years ago. The management said the channel will continue its commitment to neutrality, objectivity, and courageous journalism, aiming to rebuild audience trust and popularity in its new journey.
