The cat, named Candy, has been lovingly raised as a family member for the past four years. Taking Candy along will cost the family nearly one lakh taka (about USD 850) — covering a special travel cage, airline ticket, government permissions, pet passport, and even transit airport clearance. After overcoming various formalities and hassles, the family has finally completed preparations for the journey. Candy is scheduled to fly with Qatar Airways at 3:15 AM on Wednesday (November 5). Rikta Begum, a resident of Manikpur in Munshiganj town, has been taking care of Candy since 2021. At that time, her son Shithil was still in school. They bought the kitten online for 15,000 taka, and since then, it has become a beloved part of the family. Now that Shithil has completed his HSC, the entire family is moving to Rome, Italy, where Rikta’s husband Abdul Hai works. Leaving Candy behind was simply unthinkable for them. Rikta Begum said, “We’ve raised Candy like our own family member. She stops eating whenever we go out. So, it’s impossible for us to leave her behind.” Her son, Shithil Hasan, added emotionally, “Candy is the source of joy in our home. The house feels empty without her. That’s why we’re taking her with us.” When Abdul Hai visited Bangladesh on vacation a few months ago, he too was touched by Candy’s affection. Understanding his family’s emotional attachment, he agreed to take the cat along. To comply with airline rules, Candy will travel in a special carrier. The airfare alone costs USD 350 (around 40,000 taka). Including the pet passport, government No Objection Certificate (NOC), and transit airport clearance, the total expense has reached around one lakh taka. Dr. Shiben Chandra Liton, Veterinary Consultant and Surgeon at Titlark Petwell Center, Munshiganj, said, “For international pet travel, vaccination, health certification, and microchipping must meet global standards. Candy has been microchipped, so scanning her body reveals a unique identification number.” Md. A. Jalil, District Livestock Officer of Munshiganj, said, “According to our records, this is the first time a pet cat from Munshiganj is traveling abroad. It’s a remarkable example of human love and compassion toward animals.” Candy’s pet passport includes her photo, age, breed, weight, vaccination, and medical history. Weighing about six kilograms, the domestic mixed-breed cat will be carried in the aircraft cabin like hand luggage, as per airline policy. Despite the challenges and costs, the family has no complaints—because Candy is no longer just a pet, but a symbol of love and belonging. From Munshiganj to Rome, Candy’s journey stands as a heartwarming testament to the fact that the bond between humans and animals knows no borders.
