The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has decided to introduce a separate SIM numbering system for Internet of Things (IoT) devices that rely on mobile data, aiming to support the country’s rapidly growing smart technology ecosystem. Currently, devices such as vehicle trackers, smart meters, industrial sensors, and wearables use the same SIM number series as regular mobile users, a practice experts warn could strain the existing network as connected devices increase.
Under the new plan, IoT and machine-to-machine devices will receive dedicated SIM numbers that support data services only, excluding voice calls. This move is expected to improve network management, enhance security, and enable better long-term planning. Officials say the initiative will help Bangladesh prepare for the broader adoption of smart technologies across cities, industries, transport, utilities, and agriculture, particularly as nationwide 4G coverage expands and preparations for 5G advance. The BTRC is also considering simplified registration processes and potential tax relief for IoT SIMs to lower costs and encourage businesses and startups to adopt data-driven solutions.
