A child from Teknaf who was critically injured by gunfire fired from across the Myanmar border has died. Huzayfa Sultana Afnan passed away at 9:50am while undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital in the capital. The information was confirmed by her maternal uncle, Mahfuzur Rahman.

Earlier, on the morning of January 11, the child was injured by gunfire originating from Myanmar’s Rakhine State near the Bangladesh border. She initially received treatment locally.

As her condition deteriorated, she was transferred to Chattogram Medical College Hospital and later shifted to the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital in Dhaka, where she eventually died while receiving treatment.

Meanwhile, the security situation in Myanmar’s Rakhine State has worsened in recent times. Incidents of airstrikes, drone attacks, mortar shelling and bomb explosions have increased. In particular, the junta forces have intensified air attacks targeting positions of the armed group Arakan Army in and around the Maungdaw Township. Ongoing clashes among various armed groups have further complicated the border situation.

As a result, the impact of cross-border gunfire is increasingly being felt in Bangladesh’s border communities.
