Faridpur Medical College BNP Leader Warns Administration Over Ban on Student Politics

Zulfiqar Hossain, Joint Convenor of Faridpur BNP, has criticized the ongoing ban on student politics at Faridpur Medical College and issued a warning to the administration. Speaking at a meeting on Sunday in the college auditorium, he said, “We will observe the situation until the 12th. If after that date, we are not allowed to participate in normal political activities in person, a serious situation will arise. If my Nationalist Student Party cannot practice politics, we will shut down politics at Faridpur Medical College. If student politics is banned, this medical college will effectively be closed.”

The remarks were made during a prayer and discussion session organized by the Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB), Faridpur Medical College branch, in memory of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia on Sunday, January 11. The session was chaired by Syed Asif Ul Alam, head of the DAB Faridpur Medical College branch.

Speaking as a guest, BNP leader Zulfiqar Hossain stated, “Politics blessed by Razakars will not succeed here, and Nationalist Student Party members, as sector commanders and organizers of the Liberation War, cannot be barred from politics. I will not allow this. If needed, I will leave BNP politics and rejoin the student party. The situation is concerning.”

Student politics at Faridpur Medical College has been banned since August 24, 2024, when the college’s Academic Council passed the decision.

Regarding Hossain’s remarks, Vice Principal Khan Md. Arif said he attended the event but could not clearly follow what was said.

Hossain later told Prothom Alo that his comments were meant to pressure the college administration and the ruling party-aligned student groups, which he claimed have been restricting the Nationalist Student Party since the political changes in 2024. According to him, the ruling student groups conduct secret religious events and prevent ordinary students from participating in political activities. During the DAB event, only teachers and nurses were allowed, while regular students were barred.

The session was hosted by Mizanur Rahman, General Secretary of DAB Faridpur Medical College branch. Central Treasurer Mehdi Hasan delivered the keynote address, with special guests including businessman Farian Yusuf, DAB Faridpur District Convener Mustafizur Rahman, and Member Secretary Tansif Jubayer. Central President Harun Al Rashid sent greetings online. The program concluded with prayers for the peace of Begum Khaleda Zia’s soul.
