The 13th national parliamentary election is set to be held nationwide on February 12. Ahead of the polls, the BNP has launched a free Wi-Fi service in the Korail slum of Dhaka-17.

On Wednesday (February 4), Humayun Kabir, BNP’s International Affairs Secretary, inaugurated the service at Jamai Bazar field in Korail, organized by Chetana Bangladesh.

Humayun Kabir said that if BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman is elected on February 12, the country will gain not only a prime minister but also a social and economic reformer. Under his leadership, education, healthcare, and overall development would reach unprecedented heights, he added.

Commenting on the election campaign, he accused the Jamaat-e-Islami candidate of showing more tendencies toward hooliganism than social service. Referring to recent incidents, he highlighted concerns over abuse of army officers in cantonment areas and a case where a bank manager was attacked, which have unsettled public sentiment.

He further cautioned that while some may claim to act in the name of Islam, their real aim has historically been power, and similar concerns have arisen in the current election. At this stage, a particular party appears to be acting recklessly.

Humayun Kabir emphasized that if Tarique Rahman wins and secures the mandate of the people, Dhaka-17 will become a model constituency for development. He promised a future Bangladesh based on equal rights, where children of ordinary citizens—not only the privileged—would have opportunities to become ministers or parliamentarians. He called on voters to strengthen Tarique Rahman’s hand by voting for the Dhanner Sheesh symbol on February 12, assuring that BNP stands with the people.

Chetana Bangladesh Chairman Engineer Faisal Salam said that free Wi-Fi has now been made available in Korail, allowing all smart device users, especially students, to access the internet at no cost.

He added that Chetana Bangladesh is a non-political organization that has been working for public welfare for many years, undertaking social initiatives across the country, including during the COVID-19 pandemic—not just in Dhaka-17.

As part of its regular activities in Dhaka-17, T&T recently organized a football tournament at the field involving local groups from Korail.

The free Wi-Fi service will gradually expand across the entire Korail area and eventually cover the entire Dhaka-17 constituency. Faisal Salam also promised further development initiatives, including cleaning Banani Lake and improving waste management. He said that if Tarique Rahman is elected, the area’s environment and quality of life will see significant improvement.
