BNP-nominated candidate for the Cox’s Bazar-4 (Ukhiya–Teknaf) constituency and District BNP President Shahjahan Chowdhury has received threats warning him to withdraw from the election. The letter stated that if he does not step aside, he will face the same fate as Osman Hadi.

The threatening letter was sent anonymously by post on December 23. It mentioned a group named “Battalion 71,” though no verified information about the group’s identity has been found. A piece of white burial shroud cloth was also enclosed with the letter.

The letter read that Chowdhury was under 24-hour surveillance by a “killing squad” and urged him to refrain from contesting in the upcoming parliamentary election, otherwise facing deadly consequences.

Shahjahan Chowdhury said the letter was delivered through the post office and suspected local criminal groups. He stated that the threats were meant to intimidate him but would not succeed, adding that he was not afraid of death.

Ukhiya Police Station OC Noor Ahmed confirmed that a General Diary (GD) has been filed by the BNP candidate and that legal action will be taken accordingly.
