Local BNP leaders have accused Jamaat-e-Islami of distributing cash among voters during an election campaign in Bhuiyanpur, Tangail. Jamaat leaders, however, claim the allegation is false and part of a deliberate smear campaign.

The incident occurred around 10:00am on Wednesday in Jagatpura village of Ajurna Union. A video related to the incident has circulated on social media. In the 18-second clip, Jamaat leaders are seen leaving the area while several people behind them display Tk1,000 and Tk500 notes, saying, “They gave money.” However, the video does not show Jamaat leaders handing cash to anyone.

Ajurna Union BNP vice-president Hatem Khan said that after receiving information that Jamaat leaders were distributing money among voters in Jagatpura village, local BNP leaders went there. He claimed that a bag of cash was recovered from them, leading to an argument between the two sides. He added that some people later displayed the money, and the video of that scene was shared on social media.

Upazila Jamaat’s organising secretary, Md Rabiul Alam Talukdar, said that around 10:00am he and several others went to seek votes near the house of Tikka Khan in the central part of Jagatpura. At that time, 30–35 BNP leaders and activists, including Niamat Ali Khan, Labu Khan, Monayem Khan, Nayeb Khan, Md Khalil and Ismail Hossain, obstructed them. He said they were accused of collecting voters’ mobile phone numbers on behalf of Jamaat, which led to an argument. At one stage, Rabiul Alam claimed he was assaulted and his mobile phone was snatched. He alleged that BNP activists then held up Tk500 and Tk1,000 notes and claimed Jamaat had come to distribute cash, recorded the scene on mobile phones and spread it on social media.

Rabiul Alam Talukdar later filed a written complaint with Bhuiyanpur police station in the afternoon, alleging obstruction of campaigning and assault. Jamaat’s candidate for the Tangail-2 (Gopalpur-Bhuiyanpur) constituency and district unit secretary Humayun Kabir, along with Bhuiyanpur upazila Jamaat ameer Abdullah Al Mamun and organising secretary Rabiul Alam Talukdar, addressed a press conference at the Bhuiyanpur Press Club over the incident.

Jamaat candidate Humayun Kabir said, “Seeing our popularity and public support in the election field, our opponents have deliberately resorted to propaganda. These allegations are completely baseless, false and politically motivated.”

Bhuiyanpur police station officer-in-charge (OC) Md Sabbir Rahman told Prothom Alo that police had visited the spot and received a written complaint. He said the matter is under investigation.
