The Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC) has issued a show-cause notice to Dr. S.M. Khaliduzzaman, chairman of Bangladesh Fertility Hospital and the Jamaat-e-Islami-nominated candidate for the Dhaka-17 parliamentary seat, over allegations of using an unapproved degree.

The notice, signed on Monday (January 19) by BMDC’s acting registrar Dr. Md. Liakat Hossain, states that Dr. Khaliduzzaman mentioned a degree in “Clinical Embryology and Pre-Implantation Genetics (India)” in his promotional materials while practicing medicine. This degree is not recognized by the BMDC, and using it violates the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council Act, 2010, constituting a punishable offense.

Under Sections 13 and 29 of the Act, any medical postgraduate degree—domestic or foreign—must have council recognition. Unauthorized use of a title, name, or qualification is prohibited and punishable. The BMDC noted that using an unapproved degree is considered medical fraud against patients. Violators may face up to three years’ imprisonment, a Tk 1 lakh fine, or both, with a Tk 50,000 additional fine for each repeated offense.

Dr. Khaliduzzaman has been asked to submit a written explanation within 15 working days, providing details about the unapproved degree and his BMDC registration number.

Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami claims the notice is politically motivated. According to a media invitation, Adnan Kafi, a member of Jamaat’s North Dhaka publicity and media team, said Dr. Khaliduzzaman will address journalists regarding the show-cause notice at 4:45 pm on January 20 at Hotel InterContinental.
