Vice-Chancellor Dr. M. Shawkat Ali announced this decision following the university's 110th syndicate meeting, which was held on Saturday (February 8) evening at the Vice-Chancellor’s Conference Room in the administrative building. The syndicate meeting, where this decision was finalized, was presided over by the Vice-Chancellor himself. Vice-Chancellor Dr. M. Shawkat Ali stated that the decision to rename Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall as 'Bijoy 24' Hall and Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall as 'Shaheed Felani Hall' was taken in response to the demands of the students. Additionally, it was decided that classes and examinations would be suspended every year on July 16. The move comes after students from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement forcibly removed the nameplates of the two halls on the night of February 5. They then replaced the names with 'Bijoy 24 Hall' and 'Shaheed Felani Hall' by writing them on the buildings. On the same night, the nameplate of Begum Rokeya University, which was originally inaugurated by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, was also bulldozed by the protesters. The students further declared that the institution should be called its founding name, Rangpur University. However, no decision regarding this renaming was made during the syndicate meeting. Commenting on the development, Shamsur Rahman Sumon, the coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement at Rokeya University, stated, "We will not allow any signs of Mujibism and fascism to remain on Abu Sayeed's campus. That is why we have already removed the nameplates of the two halls. The administration has now acknowledged our demand by officially renaming them in the syndicate meeting. This decision has met our expectations, and we are pleased with the outcome."
