Under pressure from the cricketers, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has decided to remove board director M. Nazmul Islam from his position as chairman of the finance committee. Sources said the decision was taken during an emergency online meeting, and an official announcement is expected shortly.

However, the BCB cannot remove Nazmul from his position as a board director unless he resigns voluntarily. According to the BCB constitution, a director’s post becomes vacant only in cases of death, mental incapacity, disciplinary punishment, bankruptcy, absence from three consecutive board meetings, or voluntary resignation. None of the first five conditions apply to Nazmul, meaning his resignation is the only possible solution.

Notably, while the BCB constitution includes a code of conduct for players, it does not have one for directors, unlike most cricket boards worldwide. As a result, even disciplinary breaches by directors cannot be addressed directly.

Nazmul currently holds no responsibilities other than chairing the finance committee. Multiple BCB sources confirmed that the emergency meeting decided to remove him from that role and keep him away from all board-related activities. Nazmul became a board director for the first time through the Talent Hunt Cricket Academy.

The controversy surrounding Nazmul began yesterday after he made several offensive remarks about cricketers. Earlier, he had also sparked outrage by referring to Tamim Iqbal as an “agent of India” in a Facebook post.

CWA-B president Mohammad Mithun announced last night that cricketers would boycott all matches unless Nazmul resigned as a BCB director. As a result, the first BPL match at Mirpur was not played today, and the second match remains uncertain.

However, at a press conference held at the Sheraton Hotel in Banani this afternoon, CWA-B stated that if the board accepts their demands by the evening, the players would take the field for tonight’s match. Speaking alongside national team players, Mithun said, “We will return to the field on one condition—BCB must commit that this person will no longer be part of the board within 48 hours. If he remains, players will not be responsible for the suspension of matches.”

The decision to remove Nazmul from the finance committee chair followed shortly afterward, marking the strongest possible action taken by the board so far. The situation now rests with the players, with uncertainty still surrounding tonight’s Rajshahi Warriors vs Sylhet Titans match.
