The Association of Bankers Bangladesh (ABB) has officially requested Bangladesh Bank’s approval to publish a list of loan defaulters, including their names and photographs, as part of efforts to curb the country’s rising non-performing loans (NPLs).

The bankers’ body has also proposed legal reforms to remove the advantage that defaulters often gain through higher court stay orders, aiming to speed up loan recovery.

These measures are included in a five-point proposal recently submitted to the central bank via a letter signed by ABB Chairman and City Bank Managing Director Masrur Arefin. A copy was also shared with Bangladesh Bank’s Banking Regulation and Policy Department.

Key recommendations include creating a centralized database of mortgaged assets, simplifying the auction process for selling mortgaged properties, and requiring mandatory bank or court approval for defaulters seeking to travel abroad.
