Bangladesh became the champion of the first-ever SAFF Women’s Futsal Championship, defeating the Maldives 14-2 in the final match held today in Bangkok. Sabina Khatun and Monika Chakma led the team to victory.

The league-format tournament featured seven South Asian countries. Bangladesh topped the standings with 16 points from six matches, while second-placed Bhutan earned 11 points from five matches.

At Bangkok’s Nonthaburi Stadium, Bangladesh entered the final match needing just a draw to secure the title. From the first minute, the team played aggressively. However, the Maldives scored first in the third minute due to a defensive miscommunication between goalkeeper Swarna Akter and Masura Parveen.

Bangladesh quickly responded. In the fifth minute, Sabina Khatun scored from a direct free-kick. A minute later, Bangladesh earned a penalty, though Sabina missed the chance. At the 13th minute, Sabina scored another free-kick, putting Bangladesh ahead 2-1. After that, the Maldives couldn’t recover, conceding multiple goals. By the end of the first 20-minute half, Bangladesh had scored four more goals, with Lippi Akter contributing a brace.

In the second half, Bangladesh scored eight goals. Sabina completed her hat-trick in the 22nd minute, followed by Matsushima Sumaiya scoring the eighth goal. Sabina added another in the 26th minute. Before the match ended, Bangladesh scored five more goals: Nilufa Yasmin and Lippi Akter scored the 10th and 11th, Krishna the 12th, and Meherun Akter and Masura sealed the final scoreline at 14-2.

Bangladesh’s women’s futsal journey began in 2018 under coach Golam Rabbani at the Asian Championship. After six years of inactivity, the Bangladesh Football Federation restructured the team late last year. Intensive training at home and abroad prepared the squad for this inaugural SAFF Women’s Futsal Championship.

Meanwhile, the first SAFF Men’s Futsal Championship is also ongoing in Bangkok. The Maldives has already secured the title with 15 points from five matches, while Bangladesh finished fifth with seven points from six matches.
