Approved by the cabinet committee on economic affairs, this $550 million (Tk 6,700 crore) deal represents the largest-ever European equity investment in Bangladesh. Scheduled to become operational by the end of 2029, the LCT will handle ships nearly twice the size of those currently managed by the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT), easing congestion and boosting trade efficiency by over 40%. The new green port will allow direct global shipping routes, reduce freight costs, and introduce round-the-clock operations, including night navigation, for the first time in the country. APM Terminals will run the project under a Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer (DBFOT) model for up to 48 years, paying Bangladesh a Tk 250 crore signing bonus. Although some labor groups have protested leasing port operations to foreign companies, officials say the project will modernize the logistics sector, create up to 700 direct jobs, and generate stable foreign-currency revenue with minimal public spending.
