The government has taken a policy decision to establish a Military Economic Zone in the National Special Economic Zone in Mirersarai, Chattogram. This new zone will replace the previously planned India Government-to-Government (G2G) economic zone.

The announcement was made by Ashique Chowdhury, Executive Chairman of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) and the Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA), during a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka on Monday, January 26.

Ashique Chowdhury said the decision was made at the fourth meeting of BEZA’s governing board, chaired by Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus, who also serves as the board’s chairman.

He explained that the Indian economic zone has been removed from the government-to-government framework, leaving the allocated land vacant. This land will now be used to establish the Military Economic Zone in Mirersarai, covering approximately 850 acres.

The BIDA chairman noted that discussions on defense industry production have been ongoing for years. Given the growing global demand for defense products, the sector is economically promising, and Bangladesh can now begin to participate.

Ashique Chowdhury emphasized that in the current global context, having domestic arms production capability is crucial. During conflicts, shortages in ammunition can become a major problem.

He added that recent wars have shown that shortages were not in high-tech weapons but in basic supplies like bullets and tank parts. Bangladesh is now considering whether it can play a role in producing such essential items.

The Mirersarai land has been included in BEZA’s master plan, and the area will now be designated as a defense industry zone. The project originally planned for the Indian economic zone was canceled, leaving the land available for this purpose.

When asked whether any agreements had been made with other countries, Ashique Chowdhury said, “Bangladesh maintains defense-level relations with many countries, and these countries are expected to assist us in this initiative.”

He added that the Armed Forces Division, BEZA, the Chief Advisor’s Office, and the Ministry of Defense are working jointly on the project.
