Bangladesh has been identified as the lowest performer among South Asian countries in terms of the share of teachers meeting minimum competency standards, according to the latest UNESCO Global Education Statistics.

The report shows that only about 55% of secondary-level teachers in Bangladesh meet the required minimum proficiency level. Teacher competency is measured based on two key criteria: whether they have the necessary training for the level they teach and whether their academic qualifications are appropriate for that level.

In Bangladesh, the rate of qualified teachers is 54.7% at the lower secondary level and 55.2% at the upper secondary level.

In contrast, Maldives leads the region with a 98.5% rate of qualified teachers. Bhutan, Nepal, India, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan also rank above Bangladesh in this indicator.

Meanwhile, data from the Bangladesh Bureau of Educational Information and Statistics (BANBEIS) for 2024 highlights significant subject-wise gaps. Only 16.99% of secondary English teachers hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in English, while the figure is 14.66% for mathematics, indicating a clear shortage of subject-specific expertise.
